This trip was only possible with the help of Mother Nature's light winds, though we had to endure a dense fog and brisk winds. At one point, we could hear the thunderous foghorn from the lighthouse only a few hundred yards away, completely swallowed by the mist and invisible to the eye. Travelling out and back, I taught the kids how to drive the boat by keeping our navigation heading arrow straight on the chart plotter while we carefully scanned the mist for other vessels - a real life video game per say.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: 16px;">Despite the conditions, Superior didn't disappoint. Two of the boys landed absolute tanks in the 10-pound range, and we even let one of them swim back into the cool clear frigid water, which the fourth, youngest child absolutely loved. <p><p></p><div>When you only have one day available, you have to take what mother nature's going to throw at you, assuming it's safe.  I was able to get this family of 3 out to where the fish are and I told them nobody sees Lake Superior like it is today. it was rough but they handled it like champs and even overcame some seasickness. A delicious shore lunch and a great day despite rough water. At least the water temperature was cooperating at around 50 to 54° Fahrenheit.  My lund Tyee 1800 boat performed very well.</div><div><br></div><p></p></p>

A little bit of everything

<p><p><div>Today's fishing adventure on Lake Superior tallied a little bit of everything summed up as a great day.  New and old tackle, different types too.  Rods, techniques and speed, all mixed in.  Fog and smoke.  Low visibility vs high visibility above and below the water surface and water temperatures ranging from 52F to 63F in the fishing areas.  A big part of guiding is balancing it all between locations that are working that day vs those that aren't, and knowing when to move on.  A superb day on Gitchigoomie bringing home a limit of Lakers for the BBQ and smoker and releasing a massive coaster square tail back into the water.</div></p></p>

<p><p></p><div>Today I guided a family of four to beach comb the rugged shorelines of Lake Superior.  The rocks did not disappoint and then a little fishing was is order. The oldest child hooked a couple nice lakers and landed his first ever fish!  We enjoyed it at a shore lunch within the hour of being caught.  Smiles all around.  It was one of those perfect days on gitchigoomie.</div><p></p></p>

Water temps ranged from 41°F to 51°F with high, fast-flowing water, but using the MotorGuide i5 anchor to have lunch in the middle of nowhere with my dad is very precious.
